The Ultimate Weekend Road Trip

For a small island nation, Iceland packs in the natural wonders — there is a waterfall, volcano, or glacier around every corner. On our first 10 day trip, we decided to drive around the island on the Ring Road in a clockwise direction, starting in Reykjavik. Iceland has some great hotels, but we figured we would see more and save money by renting a camper van.

Traveling by van was a real adventure. We drove anywhere we wanted (except for the rough F roads that wind through the barren interior), stopped whenever there was something interesting to see, and had experiences with locals whom we never would have met otherwise.

At night, we parked near a volcano, glacier or remote village and slept with the warm hum of the heater and the howl of the wind outside.

In the morning, we found the nearest hot spring (or hot pot) and took our morning dip. The camper van came equipped with a comfy bed for 2, dining table & chairs, small drip coffee maker, refrigerator and sleeping bags — everything you need for an adventure.

FRI, OCT6, DAY 1: The Icelandic Road trip begins the moment you disembark from your plane at around 6a. Transport from airport to car park will be arranged. Once we collect our vehicles, the first stop is the famous Blue Lagoon hot spring for a rejuvenating soak. From there we take our longest drive to Skógafoss where we will stay for the first night.

SAT, OCT 7, DAY 2: Waking near Skógafoss, we will visit the massive falls where it is possible to hike to the top for amazing views. Then make our way to our second stop, Seljalandsfoss for a walk behind the falls. After lunch we travel north for the most epic waterfall of the trip, Gullfoss. We camp near here for the night with the option of taking a short drive to Geysir for a sunset water show.

SUN, OCT 8, DAY 3:  Our morning begins with a luxurious dip at the geothermal baths of Laugarvatn Fontana. After drying off, we will caravan on to the tectonic rift valley, Þingvellir National Park. We will spend the day exploring areas that were made famous by Game of Thrones and the 2014 film Noah. Afterward, we'll make our way to Reykjavik for dinner and a night on the town before turning in for the night. Here we have the option of car camping or staying at the ODDSSON Hotel.

MON, OCT 9, DAY 4: Our final day in Iceland will be spent preparing for the flight home. We will return vehicles and get breakfast before heading to the airport.
