Mysore Ashtanga is a unique form of yoga study which offers private instruction within a group setting. Its roots are firmly established in paramparā, the direct personal transmission of spiritual knowledge from teacher to student. This is how the ashtanga practice was originally taught in India.

Our goodyoga program follows the authentic method developed by late ashtanga yoga master K. Pattabhi Jois in his hometown of Mysore, which is where the method derives its name.

Myth #1:
I'm still new to yoga, and I need more instruction; I can't be left on my own yet.
Since all of the instruction in the Mysore room is one on one, you will actually get more attention and hands on assistance than a regular group class. The teacher will only leave you on your own when you both feel that you are comfortable. You can also ask questions and stop to address personal concerns with regard to each pose. 

Myth #2:
Mysore is only for advanced students.
Mysore is for everyone. The practice is taught step by step at each person's level of ability. That means in the same Mysore room, an advanced student is taught an advanced level ashtanga class while a beginner is taught a beginner level ashtanga class. You are not expected to "keep up" as you would in a regular group class. There is no competing or comparing in Mysore; the focus is specifically on you and your own practice. The teacher's main purpose is to help you rise to the occasion and achieve your individual goals within the context of a traditional yoga method.

Myth #3:
I can't do Mysore because I don't know the sequence.
If you aren't familiar with the sequence or don't have it completely memorized, you will learn it in class from the teacher in such a way that it can slowly evolve into a self-practice. Each portion of the sequence can be repeated as often as necessary for however long it takes until the mind retains it. After a few weeks of steady practice and patience, the poses will slowly and organically sink into your subconscious.

Myth #4:
Practicing six days a week is too much for me.
Realistically, we suggest that you start with a minimum of three days per week, and add gradually over time as the body becomes stronger and embraces the postures with more ease. This practice is a marathon, not a sprint. It builds you up over weeks, months, years, lifetimes.

Myth #5:
Practicing for two hours is too long for me.
Almost no one in the Mysore room is actually on his/her mat for the entire two hour interval. Brand new students rarely practice for more than one hour on average. There is an extended class period so that students can come freely over the first hour. (Yes you heard right; you can hit the snooze button a few times and still make it to class with enough time to do yoga.) When practice times start in this staggered fashion, there is more space at any given moment to address individual needs.

Myth #6:
I think I will get bored doing the same poses every day.
Your body is regenerating cells every day. Your state of mind is different every day. So too will be your experience with the same poses every day. In fact, by working with the same sequence on a daily basis, you will come to a deeper level of understanding of your body and lifestyle choices, and be able to monitor your yoga progress much more easily.

Myth #7:
I have an injury, and can't do a practice that is so physical.
In Sanskrit, the Primary Series of ashtanga yoga is called Yoga Chikitsa, or yoga therapy. This method is a scientifically proven tool for healing. A qualified ashtanga teacher can give an injured student modifications and additional therapeutic asanas to supplement the main practice to aid in his/her recovery.

Myth #8:
It's too expensive; I can't afford it.
If used to its maximum benefit, a long-term commitment to the ashtanga program at goodyoga is priced at approximately $5 per class, less than most donation-based studios, and at a 75% discount to the drop-in class rate. (You probably spend more on coffee per month.)

Myth #9:
Ashtangis are way too serious about their practice.
When first walking into the Mysore room, you may be intimidated by the quiet, intense energy; it feels this way because everyone is focusing very clearly on the breath and synchronizing it to the body. Truthfully, we work hard every day, but we also know how to have a good laugh. The people that make up our ashtanga community are some of the sweetest and most interesting people in the neighborhood. Don't forget: every student in that room has been in your shoes and had a first day too. The truth is, you will receive an incredible amount of support from both your teacher and fellow practitioners.

Myth #10:
I'm not ready.
You ARE ready. By nature, the body and mind want to be in harmony. Happiness is your birthright. The only thing holding you back is your own self-doubt. Ashtanga yoga will empower you in ways you can't even begin to imagine. The only prerequisites to practice are your breath and an open mind.
