GOODBREATH! 3 ways to catch your breath

GOODBREATH! 3 ways to catch your breath

If you have ever taken a class at a yoga studio, chances are that you practiced breathing techniques that originated from ancient yogic traditions which serve as guidelines on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. Many of these practices, including the breathing techniques discussed here, were recorded in the 15th century as the Hatha Yoga Pradipka, a sort of manual on hatha yoga

4 MINDFUL THINGS TO DO

4 MINDFUL THINGS TO DO

Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through meditation and other techniques. When people practice mindfulness their minds and bodies feel more relaxed and calm, they are more clear on what matters and can make wiser decisions and live happier lives.

3 Reasons to Make Space for Restorative Yoga in Your Practice

3 Reasons to Make Space for Restorative Yoga in Your Practice

Restorative yoga is an introspective practice, similar to that of meditation. It teaches us to relinquish control and remain in a position of support (usually by aid of many props), helps us to examine our inner landscape without evaluation and helps us to regulate the relaxation response in our body.

6 Seasonal practices for Winter

6 Seasonal practices for Winter

Winter is the time of hibernation and restoration. The quality of yin are at their height: dark, interior, passive, feminine, cooling, contraction, soft, intuitive slow, descending energy. The stillness and quietness is displayed throughout the natural world.

Taking time to take your time

Taking time to take your time

Like many people in our bright screen oriented society, I am a night owl.  My mind is sharpest when the sun is absent.  Mornings are always a slugfest with myself, but our society promotes activity and productivity at the sign of daylight.  In result, my mornings are unpleasant, rushed, and often hard to recall later on in the day....

The Gift of Compassion

The Gift of Compassion

Its an insidious notion within spiritual practices - the harder or more efficiently I practice the more perfect I will become. Often time Yoga teachers and yogis alike are looked upon to be a template of health, dedication and steady balance. Sure we all strive for this, and in the age of social media, it’s more often than not difficult to separate the notion of happiness with perceived happiness.

the second chakra

the second chakra

“To be sensual, I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the making of bread.” - James Baldwin

I have been using this James Baldwin quote for inspiration for my classes this week that have been focusing on our second chakra, the svadhistana chakra.

Our limbs do not exist independently of one another. My classes focus on the intersection of our extremities — the core. That's where we begin each pose and find strength to grow outward.
