goodteacher of July – Katrina

Katrina is not only goodteacher of July, she keeps the goodyoga ship afloat as General Manager (goodgm as we like to call it). She has a knack for juggling tasks like none other! Katrina exudes passion and dedication whether she is negotiating business stuff (yes this very much exists in the yoga world too), guiding students through a class, or belting out a tune on stage. What does this woman eat for breakfast?!

Thanks Katrina for all that you do, and for taking the time to answer our goodquestions…in ALL CAPS!!!

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
WELL, I THINK I’M TOO COMPLEX TO WORK TOWARDS AN IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS. AREN’T WE ALL? HAPPINESS IS TOO ELUSIVE.  I HAVE MORE BEEN TRYING TO ASK MYSELF WHAT WILL NOURISH ME THE MOST. WE HAVE SO MANY CHOICES TO MAKE EVERY DAY. IF WE CAN START TO IDENTIFY THE CHOICES THAT WILL NOURISH AND FULFILL US IN POSITIVE WAYS AND THEN CHOOSE THOSE, I THINK THAT’S ALWAYS A STEP TOWARDS GREATER HAPPINESS.

What is your greatest fear?
YIKES. I DON’T LIKE TO PUT MY FEARS INTO THE UNIVERSE. ALL THAT MANIFESTATION STUFF. MAYBE THAT’S THE FEAR. THAT I WILL MANIFEST TERRIBLE THINGS BY THINKING OF THEM. POSITIVE THOUGHTS, POSITIVE THOUGHTS. AT THE VERY LEAST, I FEAR NOT BEING ABLE TO DO ALL THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO DO. AND I WANNA DO A LOT.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I’M A GEMINI. SO I CAN HARDLY EVER MAKE A DECISION. AND WHEN I DO, I WORRY THAT I MADE THE WRONG ONE. I’M ALSO A LITTLE FIRECRACKER. I CAN….OVERREACT. NOT CRAZY-PERSON STYLE, BUT IN THE WAY WHERE I THINK, “IF I HAD JUST HANDLED THAT A LITTLE BETTER, THINGS MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN SO STRESSFUL.”

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
I DON’T LIKE THE “SMELL ME, LOOK AT ME” ATTITUDE. I ADMIRE GENUINE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMPASSIONATE, ACCEPTING, AND KIND AND WHO DO AND ACT FOR A GREATER GOOD, RATHER THAN SELF-PROMOTION. I HAVE A HARD TIME STOMACHING A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE WHO TALKS ONLY OF THEMSELVES WITHOUT ANY CARE FOR LISTENING TO OTHERS IN THE CONVERSATION. AND I HOPE IF I AM THAT WAY, SOMEONE WILL TELL ME. I DON’T THINK I AM.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
RIGHT NOW, MY HAIR. I CUT IT A FEW MONTHS AGO AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR IT TO GROW IN.

Which living person do you most despise?
WHAT AN AWFUL QUESTION! AS THE GENERAL MANAGER, I THINK THIS SHOULD NOT BE A QUESTION TO HAVE TO EVEN THINK ABOUT ANSWERING. (WINK…)

What is the quality you most like in a partner?
EVERYTHING ABOUT MY LOVE. YEA YEA YEA. I KNOW. GROSS. BUT HE’S AWESOME.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
SO MANY! IN COLLEGE, I MADE IT MY GOAL TO REMOVE “LIKE” FROM MY VOCABULARY. I THINK IT’S SNEAKING BACK IN. CALL ME ON IT IF YOU HEAR IT. SERIOUSLY. AND I THINK I SAY “A LITTLE BIT” IN MY TEACHING A LITTLE TOO OFTEN.

Which talent would you most like to have?
I WOULD LIKE TO BE A KICK BUTT FIGHTER. BRUCE LEE-STYLE. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. SOMETHING SUPER PHYSICAL AND EMPOWERING. I THINK POWERFUL WOMEN ARE AWESOME. NOT WITH THE INTENTION TO HARM BUT RATHER OWNERSHIP AND PROTECTION OF MY BODY AND MY SPACE IN A COMMANDING AND RESPECTED WAY.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I WOULD TAKE BIGGER RISKS AND STOP THINKING SO MUCH.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I HAVEN’T DONE IT YET.

What is your favorite occupation?
SHH….DON’T TELL ANYONE….ANYTHING INVOLVING THEATER. NO OFFENSE TO MY LOVING YOGA COMMUNITY AND FLAN & RAY. BUT THEATER IS MY PASSION. YOGA IS ANOTHER FORM OF EXPRESSION WHICH IS WHY I AM SO DRAWN TO IT. BUT THE EXCHANGE OF AUDIENCE AND ACTORS IN A LIVE PERFORMANCE, AND THE BEAUTIFUL GIFT OF VULNERABILITY IN STORY-TELLING, THAT’S JUST IT.  THAT’S SOMETHING SPECIAL.

What is your most marked characteristic?
FLAN ONCE TOLD ME FROM A PHOTO OF ME THAT SHE WOULD KNOW MY BUTT ANYWHERE. I’M OK WITH THAT. SO MY BUTT? IS THAT APPROPRIATE? MAYBE MY WEIRD FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND HOW I HAVE A HARD TIME JUST SMILING IN PHOTOS?

What do you most value in your friends?
HONESTY AND FORGIVENESS. I THINK FRIENDS NEED TO BE ABLE TO BE REAL WITH ONE ANOTHER. FRIENDSHIP CAN SO EASILY BE CAST ASIDE. TRUE FRIENDS LISTEN TO EACH OTHER AND FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “JUST A FRIEND.”  THEY ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS FAMILY AND LOVERS.

How would you like to die?
AGAIN THE WHOLE MANIFESTATION THING. OYE.

What is your motto?
BELIEVE IN THE UNIVERSE. I ALSO LOVE A POEM I HEARD IN MY 200-HOUR TEACHER TRAINING. ONE OF THE LINES SAYS “THAT IF I EXTRACTED THE BILE OR THE HONEY OF THINGS, WAS BECAUSE I PUT IN THEM BILE OR ZESTY HONEY. WHEN I PLANTED ROSE BUSHES, I HARVESTED ALWAYS ROSES.” I THINK IT’S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO SAY THAT WE GET OUT OF LIFE WHAT WE PUT INTO IT. IF YOU’RE GOING TO PUT NEGATIVITY INTO YOUR LIFE, LIFE WILL GIVE YOU BACK NEGATIVITY. IF YOU WANT THE POSITIVE, SOW THE POSITIVE.

What is your favorite thing about you yoga practice?
HOW IT’S CHANGING. I USED TO WANT WAM BAM THANK YOU MA’AM VINYASA YOGA. IT KILLS ME NOW. I NEED MORE RESTORATIVE AND SLOWER PRACTICES. I LOVE THAT I AM USING MY YOGA TO LISTEN TO MY BODY AND WHAT IT NEEDS.

What drove you to start practicing yoga?
WELL. A BAD THING. AND THEN IT TURNED INTO THE GREATEST EXPLORATION OF MYSELF AND SELF-LOVE. SUPER GRATEFUL FOR THAT BAD THING.

What do you think is the purpose of yoga?
I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF CONFUSION ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF YOGA. ONE OF MY TEACHERS, SAM CHASE, TOLD A STORY ABOUT HOW HE HAD BEEN TRYING TO GET HIS MOTHER TO “DO YOGA” FOR YEARS. ONE DAY, HE WATCHED HER GARDENING AND REALIZED THAT THIS WAS HER YOGA. THAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL. YOGA IS ABOUT AWARENESS AND CONSCIOUSNESS, NOT ABOUT GETTING YOUR BODY INTO A PRETZEL SHAPE. IT’S ABOUT FINDING CONTENTMENT AND CLEARING THE MIND. WHATEVER GIVES YOU YOUR YOGA OR YOUR MENTAL CLARITY IS EXACTLY RIGHT AND IS EXACTLY PERFECT. MOST OF US WILL NEVER ACHIEVE ENLIGHTENMENT. BUT IS THAT REALLY THE INTENTION IN 2015? OR IS IT TO JUST SIMPLY FIND SOME PEACE WITH YOURSELF IN NOURISHING WAYS? IF THAT’S ON YOUR MAT IN A SWEATY VINYASA CLASS TO OPEN THE BODY, AWESOME. AND IF IT’S SITTING IN A PARK PLAYING WITH YOUR DOG, THAT’S AWESOME, TOO. YOGA IS A CONSTANT PRACTICE. IT DOESN’T START AND END WITH A SINGLE ACTIVITY. I THINK WE SHOULD BE TRYING TO FIND OUR YOGA IN EVERYTHING WE DO.
